Evaluation

After in-depth research on many different make up brands I decided for my chosen
brand to be Max Factor. I researched further into this brand and developed on my
ideas. I created six looks relating to the Max Factor brand and spring/summer 2016,
which include Catwalk, Editorial and Advertising images.
I chose Max Factor because I have always liked their make up products and after
researching about the history of it; it really intrigued me and caught my interest
right away. I just wanted to gain more and more knowledge about the brand, which
is exactly what I did.
When shooting my images I researched the make up and hair looks used in many of
the max factor shoots to give me ideas and inspiration on how I wanted my chosen
models to look. I related it to spring/summer 2016 so also researched the different
colours and trends so it gave me ideas of how I was going to link it together to give
me my desired looks.
I also thought about locations of where I would like to shoot my images. I also used
props in some of them as I felt this would definitely help to portray a story, which
would be helpful for editorial.
I also researched Max Factors latest products and their best sellers to help me
choose what I would like to advertise. As I was creating one daytime advertising
image and one night-time image I looked into which products best suited each look.
Also when shooting the images I was sure to highlight the area I was advertising, for
example, eyes and lips.
I was particularly happy with the way the make up went when shooting for my
first catwalk look. The contour and highlighting really showed up well on camera
and gave my models face a great glow. I was also really impressed with how the lips
looked on camera, using the glitter on them really made them shine making the lips
look metallic relating to my brand and spring/summer 2016.
When shooting for my second catwalk look I thoroughly enjoyed it as I have to say
this was definitely my favourite look of them all! I feel the whole make up and hair
really suited my model and also related well to the look I was aiming for which was
a futuristic look using the Star Wars theme from my brand and also relating it to
spring/summer 2016 with the high fashion trend of metallic.
When shooting for my first editorial look I found it very fun and exciting, which
I felt was a great mood to feel when shooting this look. I related this look to the
new Max Factor Marilyn Monroe lipstick collection for spring 2016. I feel I had the
model for this shoot. The locations I used I felt were all quite relaxed environments
as most of Marilyn Monroe’s shoots are all natural looking with a relaxed feel to
them.
Unfortunately I wasn’t happy nor satisfied with my editorial second look. My model
had work the day I was shooting and I feel it all got a bit rushed.
When looking back at the images I wasn’t at all happy with the make up, the blues
didn’t match. When doing the make up and relating it to my research I wanted the
eyes and lips to be bold as this is a popular trend for spring/summer 2016, however
I feel the blue I used for the eyes and lips was completely the wrong blue as it was
far too dark making it look overly harsh and I feel the contouring on the cheeks was
too much as well, I feel I shouldn’t have made it blue as this made it look a bit over
the top so I decided to reshoot.
When reshooting unfortunately my previous model I used wasn’t available at the
time I needed her to do the shoot, which meant I had to quickly find a new model.
However I was very pleased with my new model as I really felt she suited the look
as her dark skin tone really complimented the blues I used for her make up. This
time round I decided to use a brighter blue on the eyes and lips so it didn’t look so
harsh on the models face, although I did still use products with a shine to still give
that metallic look relating to spring/summer 2016 and also the Max Factor blue hue
spring/summer collection shown below. I also decided to leave out the blue contouring
on the cheeks this time as I felt this also made the images look too harsh last
time.
When shooting for my first advertisement look, it was a daytime look advertising
the brand new Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara.
I wanted my look to relate to spring/summer 2016 so I decided to use a bluey/green
eye shadow on the eyes, which matched the packaging of the mascara I was advertising.
However I didn’t add much more colour to the face as I wanted to make it
clear that it was the mascara I was advertising and didn’t want anything to distract
this.
When shooting for my second advertisement look this was a night-time look and
I chose to advertise the new ruby red Max Factor lipstick from the latest Marilyn
Monroe spring collection 2016. I gave my model a dewy skin base as I feel this gives
an evening feel to the make up too and I love how it came out on camera with a nice
glow to her face. I didn’t do much more to the make up apart from applying a thin
layer of mascara to the lashes.
The only thing I was unhappy about was my models nails still being blue from the
previous shoot, I feel this didn’t match in with the look, however I don’t feel this was
a huge issue as I was able to edit this in Photoshop.
I feel my strengths from this unit were my people skills, planning skills and communication
skills. I found communicating effectively with other students and people
around me to discuss my ideas very helpful as I feel having other people’s opinions
is great as people don’t always see things the same way and can always add to your
ideas. I also feel my planning and organisation skills were really good this term as I
made sure to keep up to date with everything as I learnt from before just how difficult
it is to catch up when you fall behind.
I would say my weakness from this unit was editing the photos in Photoshop as this
has always been a struggle for me. However I did put a lot of time and effort into it
this term so I do feel more confident now than I have done before but I do still find
it quite time consuming. I feel this is something, which will improve over time with
the more practice I have.

Edited Images on Photoshop

Editing my final photo's on Photoshop has always been a struggle for me. However this term I decided to give myself more time to learn the different techniques so it could sink in properly. I arranged more time out of lesson to see Ken so he was able to give me extra help and knowledge when coming down to editing my photos. Ken also had a folder with very useful notes in which gave us step by step guide to editing the photo's, I found this extremely helpful. Once I got a better understanding of editing the photo's on Photoshop I actually got really stuck into it.
I can say overall I am very happy with my edited images and feel it was a great outcome.

History of Max Factor

Mr Max Factor credited as the father of modern make up. He was born in Lodz, Russia on 5th August 1877 and emigrated to America in 1914 and settled in LA where he was closer to the budding film industry.
Originally Max Factor was a chemist, when he became fascinated with cosmetics, opening his first shop in Moscow selling his hand made rouges, creams, fragrances and wigs. In 1904 he became the official beautician and wig-maker to the Russian Royal Family.
Mr Max Factor was named the golden Hollywood's leading make-up artist and he created the first mascara wand and also the first foundation!
He then started working with Hollywood's leading film stars and making his own cosmetic products for a glamorous but realistic look on screen.
In 1916 he began selling eye shadow and eyebrow pencils which was the first time these products became available outside the movie industry. Then in 1920 he launched a full range of cosmetics, calling it 'make-up' - a phrase in which he coined.
Mr Max Factor combined science and make-up artistry over one hundred years to create market leading, iconic products. He was a great inspiration and by 20 he was running his own make-up shop where he created the signature looks of the era's most famous icons such as Ava Gardner, Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich.
In 1938 at the age of 59 when Mr Max Factor died, his son Frank took over the business until the 1970's.

Below are the products pioneered by Max Factor:
  • 1914 - the first make-up to give a more natural look on film
  • 1918 - colour harmony, a face powder line in many shades to allow customising
  • 1925 - supreme nail polish, a powder that was sprinkled on the nails and buffed off to give them a tint and shine
  • 1930 - introduced lipgloss
  • 1937 - introduced pan cake make-up for colour film and in 1938 a concealer called Erace
  • 1940 - True colour smearproof lipstick
  • 1948 - pan stick make-up
  • 1971 - first waterproof make-up

Make-up developed in the 1940's by Max Factor, Jr. for black-and-white television. Previously, make-up developed for panchromatic film had also been used for television but more sophisticated cameras adopted after World War II were less forgiving of make-up developed for a very different medium. The new cameras, however, transmitted images in negative. The company’s solution was a make-up that looked highly unnatural in real life (to the point that performers often balked at wearing it) but appeared natural when reversed on screen.

The Beauty Calibrator invented by Factor in 1932. The device, which measured the degree to which a person’s face and head differed from what was deemed to be ideal, was used to determine the most effective makeup solution. Photo Kristin Beeler.

Below is a video of a make-up class by Max Factor back in 1935 I was very intrigued when watching this and thought it was fascinating to see how the styles have changed.

Below is a video I watched which tells the story of Max Factor, I really enjoyed watching this and can say I found it very inspirational and fascinating.
